Best family and party games for Christmas Day 2026

Jackbox Party Pack 12, sofa co-op, card games and board-game stocking fillers – party games that work when the whole family is in the room on Christmas Day.

Christmas Day game nights fail for predictable reasons: someone can’t use a controller, the rules take twenty minutes to explain, or half the room wants something gentle while the other half wants chaos. The fix is to pick by situation, not by hype – and to keep a phone-party option and a card-game option in reserve.

Disclosure: some links below go to our sister site What2Buy (UK picks and prices; use for ideas and buy locally if you’re elsewhere) and to Nightfandom on Etsy. We don’t list prices here. Full disclosure.

Best for a mixed-age living room: Jackbox

The Jackbox Party Pack 12 – out now

Jackbox’s newest pack launched on 14–15 October 2026 for PC (Steam and Epic), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Five short games, 2–8 players, everyone joins on a phone – so grandparents and kids who never touch a console can play. Only one person needs to own the game.

Standouts for Christmas Day:

  • Idol Factions – loud team trivia (good energy after dinner).
  • MegaPals – how well do you know each other?
  • We Forgot a Card – silly greeting-card writing (festive without trying too hard).

Use the family-friendly / moderation settings if younger players are in the room. Earlier Party Packs still work if someone already owns them; 12 is simply the newest.

Best for sofa co-op (controllers required)

Sonic Pico Park – from 12 November 2026

Two to eight players, local or online, with cross-platform play. The Pico Park formula – simple co-op puzzles that descend into shouting – is ideal when people want to play together rather than compete. Confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch and PC.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

Still the classic “friendships tested in a kitchen”. Works on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch (including Switch 2). Best with three or four people who can laugh when the soup catches fire.

It Takes Two (including Switch 2 from 15 October)

Strictly two-player story co-op – perfect for a quiet hour while the rest of the house naps. Now on Switch 2 as well as PC, PlayStation, Xbox and original Switch, with a free upgrade path for Switch owners and cross-platform play.

Best tabletop / no-console options

When the TV is busy with Christmas specials or someone refuses a controller, physical games win:

  • Liar’s UNO – bluffing twist on a familiar game; What2Buy flags it in stocking fillers for teenage boys as a family-table pick (2–6 players, ages 7+ per the listing they checked).
  • Exploding Kittens – quick, silly, 2–5 players (more with two decks).
  • Flip 7 and Quickstop – short card games that fit between courses.
  • Incohearent (What Do You Meme?) – big adult groups (listing rates it 17+), covered in stocking fillers for adults.
  • Mount Cleverest – true-or-false trivia that scales to large family groups.

Fan merch that doubles as a table gift

If you’re wrapping something for a gamer or anime fan who already owns Jackbox, a small print, sticker pack or mug from Nightfandom makes a nice “open this before we play” present. Check dispatch times – handmade orders need breathing room in December.

A simple Christmas Day plan

  1. After lunch, low effort: Jackbox or a card game on the table.
  2. Quiet mid-afternoon: It Takes Two for two people; everyone else on leftovers.
  3. Evening chaos: Sonic Pico Park or Overcooked once the non-gamers have had a go at Jackbox.
  4. Backup: one physical game that needs zero downloads, in case Wi-Fi or accounts misbehave.

Practical tips

  • Check online subscriptions (PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core/Ultimate, Nintendo Switch Online) before guests arrive.
  • Update consoles the night before – Christmas Day downloads are painful.
  • One Jackbox host device on the big screen; everyone else on phones on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Agree a noise level if neighbours or sleeping relatives are nearby – Idol Factions is not a whisper game.

For longer winter evenings after the visitors leave, our cosy games for Switch and PC list is the calm follow-up. And if you still need a present to put under the tree for the player in the family, start with the Christmas gift guide for gamers.
