Winter 2027 anime season preview: the biggest shows coming in January

Fall 2026 is still rolling, but the Winter 2027 calendar is already filling up. January brings a run of big sequels, a long-awaited shōjo adaptation and a couple of new titles with firm premiere dates. Here’s the shortlist of shows that look worth a slot on your watchlist – only titles and dates we could confirm against official or platform announcements.

A quick note on dates: Japanese TV premiere dates below are the ones announced by the shows or covered by Crunchyroll / Netflix / Anime News Network. Simulcasts usually go live at the same moment worldwide, so depending on your time zone an episode can land a day earlier or later. Streaming catalogues also vary by country – if we couldn’t confirm an international platform, we’ve marked it TBC.

The big returns

Shangri-La Frontier season 3 – Crunchyroll, from 10 January 2027

The firmest date on the board. Season 3 starts on MBS/TBS in Japan on 10 January 2027 and is planned as two consecutive cours. Crunchyroll has confirmed it will stream the new season in supported territories. If you’ve been following Sunraku through the first two seasons, this is the one to clear space for.

Sakamoto Days season 2 – Netflix (worldwide), January 2027

Netflix has confirmed Season 2 returns worldwide in January 2027, exclusively on Netflix. No exact day within January has been announced yet, so treat the window as the plan until Netflix locks a date. Season 1 (both parts) is already on the service if you need a catch-up.

Yaiba: Samurai Legend season 2 – Japan from 9 January 2027

Gōshō Aoyama’s revived samurai series returns on 9 January 2027 on YTV/NTV and affiliates (the Saturday early-evening “Gōshō Aoyama Hour” slot before Case Closed). An international streaming platform for season 2 wasn’t confirmed in the sources we checked. International platform TBC

One Punch Man season 3, second cour – from January 2027

The second half of season 3 is confirmed for a January 2027 Japanese broadcast, with JAM Project returning for the opening theme. Exact day and international platform details weren’t locked when we checked. Day and international platform TBC

New and highly anticipated

Dengeki Daisy – from January 2027 (two consecutive cours)

Kyousuke Motomi’s classic shōjo manga gets a TV anime at Studio DEEN, starting in January 2027 and running for two consecutive cours (about six months). A main promotional video and additional cast (including Tomokazu Sugita) were revealed at KyoMAF. Exact premiere day and confirmed international streamer were not in the announcements we cited – check Crunchyroll and regional catalogues nearer the time. Day and international platform TBC

The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All – Crunchyroll, from 8 January 2027

CloverWorks’ adaptation of the popular manga premieres on Nippon TV’s FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block on 8 January 2027, and Crunchyroll will simulcast it in supported territories. A strong “try episode one” pick if you like character-driven comedy with a queer romance at its centre.

BanG Dream! MyGO!!! // Ave Mujica – from 8 January 2027

The new TV series combining the MyGO!!! and Ave Mujica stories starts on Nippon TV’s FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block on 8 January 2027 at 23:30 JST. Essential if you followed either band’s earlier season; international streaming wasn’t confirmed in the official title announcement we checked. International platform TBC

These are confirmed for a January 2027 Japanese window; treat platforms and exact days as fluid unless noted:

• Love Live! Hasunosora Girls’ School Idol Club – from 10 January 2027 (Japanese broadcast confirmed; streamer TBC).
• Hirayasumi – January 2027 on NHK General (Production +h.).
• Bless – January 2027 in Fuji TV’s noitaminA block (A-1 Pictures).
• Inherit the Winds (Kaze wo Tsugumono) – January 2027 on the Agaru Anime block after a theatrical preview.
• SEKIRO: No Defeat – January 2027 TV broadcast, eight episodes (restructured from earlier release).
• Akane-banashi season 2 – January 2027.

We’ve left out titles that only have a vague “2027” window or rumoured platforms – better a shorter list than a speculative one.

Coming just after January

THE ONE PIECE – WIT Studio’s remake – is lined up for February 2027 on Netflix (seven episodes), so it’s winter season adjacent rather than a January premiere. Worth knowing about if you’re planning a One Piece rewatch over the holidays.

How to build a Winter 2027 watchlist

1. Lock in two sequels you already love (Shangri-La Frontier and Sakamoto Days are the safest bets for most people).
2. Add one new show with a firm streamer (The Guy She Was Interested In… on Crunchyroll is the clearest new pick right now).
3. Give new shows three episodes, then drop without guilt.
