How to set up a budget streaming setup for Twitch beginners

Start streaming on Twitch without overspending: free software, what to upgrade first, Twitch's recommended settings and the current Affiliate requirements.

You don’t need an expensive rig and a wall of LEDs to start streaming. Plenty of streamers begin with the PC or console they already own, a free app and one sensible upgrade. This guide walks through the order to do things in, so you spend money only where viewers will notice it.

Heads up: the product guides linked below are on What2Buy, our sister buying-guide site. What2Buy is a UK site, so its picks, prices and retailer links are for UK shoppers – if you’re elsewhere, use the guides for ideas and check what’s sold locally. It earns from some retailer links. Binge Bulletin doesn’t list products or prices itself. See our disclosure.

Step 1: start with what you have (free)

  • Software: OBS Studio is free and open source, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It’s what most beginners use.
  • Consoles: PS5 and Xbox can stream to Twitch directly from the console – a zero-cost way to test whether you enjoy it before buying anything.
  • Settings: Twitch’s own broadcasting guidelines recommend 1080p at 60fps with a 6,000 kbps bitrate, or 720p at 60fps at 4,500 kbps. If your upload speed struggles, a stable 720p stream beats a stuttering 1080p one every time.

For a full walkthrough of the basics, What2Buy’s streaming setup for beginners is a good companion to this post.

Step 2: fix your audio first

Viewers will forgive a blurry webcam, but they’ll leave if they can’t hear you – or if your mic picks up every keyboard click. A decent USB microphone is the single most worthwhile upgrade. See best streaming microphones under £50, and if your desk is cramped, a mic arm under £50 gets it closer to your mouth and out of shot.

Free tip: OBS has built-in noise suppression and a noise gate. Turn them on before you buy anything.

Step 3: lighting before a better camera

A cheap webcam with good light looks better than an expensive one in a dark room. Face a window in the day, or add a small light – see best streaming lights under £50. Then, if you want a facecam, best webcams for streaming under £50 covers the budget end.

Step 4: console extras (only if you need them)

Streaming a Switch or Switch 2 through a PC needs a capture card, because neither Switch has built-in Twitch streaming. What2Buy has a guide to capture cards for Switch 2. PS5 and Xbox players can skip this step until they want overlays and alerts.

For everything in one place, browse What2Buy’s streaming and creator gear section.

Step 5: understand how Twitch works for new streamers

  • Monetisation tools for everyone: since May 2026, Twitch has been rolling out subs, Bits, emotes, badges and Channel Points to eligible streamers worldwide, not just Affiliates and Partners.
  • Getting paid still needs Affiliate status. Twitch updated the Affiliate criteria in 2026: stream for 4 hours, on 4 different days, reach 25 followers and average at least 3 concurrent viewers on 4 different days. Payouts start at a $50 minimum.
  • Rules and tax differ by country – check Twitch’s help pages and your local rules before you start earning.

Beginner habits that matter more than kit

  1. Pick a schedule you can keep. Two fixed evenings a week beats random marathons.
  2. Talk, even to nobody. Early streams often have zero viewers; narrating what you’re doing makes VODs and clips watchable later.
  3. Play what you love. Big releases are crowded – smaller or cosier games can be easier to get noticed in. Our cosy games picks are a good start.
  4. Make your corner comfy. You’ll be sitting there for hours – see our cosy gaming corner guide.
