Cosy Corner

Anime films worth watching on a cosy night in

Seven anime films for a blanket-and-tea evening – Ghibli classics, Makoto Shinkai and a modern gem – with where they stream by region.

Some nights call for a film rather than a series: one sitting, a proper ending, and nobody saying “just one more episode” at midnight. Anime films are perfect for it. These seven range from gentle to gently heartbreaking, and none need any prior knowledge.

A note on streaming: anime film rights are a patchwork. Below is where each title streams in most places at the time of writing, but catalogues change and vary a lot by country, so check a service like JustWatch for your region.

The Studio Ghibli shelf

Where: Netflix in most countries outside the US and Japan; HBO Max in the US. Check your local Netflix, as a few countries differ.

My Neighbour Totoro

The ultimate cosy film: two sisters, a countryside house and a giant forest spirit at a bus stop in the rain. Ideal for all ages.

Kiki’s Delivery Service

A young witch moves to a seaside town and starts a delivery business. Warm, funny and secretly about burnout – which hits differently as an adult.

Spirited Away

If you’ve somehow never seen it, tonight’s the night. A girl trapped in a bathhouse for spirits, and still one of the most imaginative films ever made.

The Boy and the Heron

Hayao Miyazaki’s most recent film, about a grieving boy led into a strange other world. More puzzling than the others, and gorgeous. Netflix outside the US and Japan; Max/HBO Max in the US.

Beyond Ghibli

Suzume

Makoto Shinkai’s road-trip fantasy about a girl closing magical doors across Japan. Big, emotional and visually stunning. Where: Crunchyroll in many regions, including North America and most of Europe; availability differs elsewhere.

Wolf Children

Mamoru Hosoda’s film about a mother raising two children who can turn into wolves. A tender, slow film that rewards a quiet evening. Where: varies a lot by region – often rent or buy only.

Look Back

Just under an hour long, from the creator of Chainsaw Man: two girls bonded by drawing manga. A perfect short watch – keep tissues nearby. Where: Prime Video (worldwide).

Make a night of it

Dim the lights, make something warm and put phones in another room. Our cosy gaming corner guide works just as well for film nights. Want more? See our underrated anime from the last five years and best anime for beginners.
